During a campaign rally on Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump narrowly dodged what appears to have been an assassination attempt. A gunman opened fire, leading to Secret Service agents quickly escorting Mr. Trump offstage as a bullet grazed the upper part of his right ear. He was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment and later discharged.
Tragedy struck at the rally as one spectator was fatally shot, and two others suffered critical injuries. The attacker was neutralized by Secret Service agents, resulting in his death.
The shooting has been met with widespread condemnation, including from Mr. Trump's primary rival in the presidential race, President Joe Biden, and former President Barack Obama.
President Biden emphasized, "There's no place in America for this kind of violence. Everybody must denounce it." He also directly reached out to Mr. Trump, as reported by the White House.
Former President Obama also voiced his condemnation, stating, "There is absolutely no room for political violence in our democracy. I'm relieved that former President Trump wasn't seriously harmed."
On his Truth Social network, Mr. Trump shared details of the frightening encounter, mentioning hearing a whizzing sound and feeling a bullet graze his ear, causing significant bleeding.
The identity and motive of the attacker have not been disclosed by authorities as the investigation is ongoing.
The impact of this incident on the upcoming November presidential election remains uncertain. Mr. Trump, 78, is a favored candidate among conservatives and has consistently campaigned against immigration, pledging to deport thousands of illegal immigrants if elected.
President Biden, 81, the Democratic candidate, promotes a more inclusive society and has presented pathways for undocumented immigrants to attain citizenship. Biden has faced internal party criticism about his cognitive abilities, especially following a lackluster debate performance against Trump. Despite calls from some Democrats urging him to step down from the race, Biden has reaffirmed his dedication to defeating Trump in the election.
