On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that as of July 21, 2024, the global count of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surpassed 775 million, with fatalities exceeding seven million since the onset of the pandemic.

This significant update was communicated through a statement released in Abuja.

In its report, the WHO highlighted concerning trends: from June 24 to July 21, there was a 30 percent increase in new COVID-19 cases worldwide. This surge indicates a worrying resurgence of the virus in various regions.

Furthermore, the WHO noted a 26 percent rise in the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 during the same 28-day timeframe. These statistics underscore the ongoing impact of the pandemic and the need for continued vigilance and public health measures.

  • “Compared to the previous 28-day period (27 May to 23 June), with more than 186,000 new cases reported across 96 (41 per cent) countries and over 2,800 new fatalities reported across 35 (15 per cent) countries,.
  • “As of 21 July 2024, more than 775 million confirmed cases and more than seven million deaths have been reported globally since the start of the pandemic,” WHO said.

Throughout the same timeframe, 46 countries reported data on COVID-19 hospitalizations, while 35 countries provided information on admissions to intensive care units (ICU). This data collection reflects ongoing efforts to monitor the impact of the virus on healthcare systems.

According to the information collected, there were over 23,000 new hospitalizations and more than 600 new ICU admissions documented during this period. These figures highlight the continued strain COVID-19 places on healthcare facilities worldwide.

  • “Among the countries reporting these data consistently over the current and past reporting period, there was an overall increase of 11 per cent and 3 per cent in new hospitalizations and new ICU admissions, respectively,” it said.
