IISID's Recommendations for Enhancing Nigeria's Electricity Generation and Distribution

The Intellectual Icons for Sustainable Impact and Development (IISID) has put forth a series of crucial recommendations aimed at improving electricity generation and distribution in Nigeria. In a recent statement, the organization underscored the pressing need for the Nigerian government to invest in power infrastructure, renewable energy sources, and grid modernization. With a population surpassing 210 million, Nigeria currently faces a significant electricity deficit, requiring approximately 180,000 MW for reliable supply, yet generating less than 6,000 MW.

IISID highlighted the dominance of gas-fired power plants within the Nigerian power sector, which are plagued by ongoing supply challenges and insufficient investment. The organization pointed out that, despite Nigeria's abundant renewable energy resources—such as solar, wind, and hydropower—these opportunities remain largely untapped. IISID firmly believes that leveraging these renewable resources could substantially enhance electricity generation and access, warranting immediate action from the government.

As experts in power generation and sustainability, IISID proposed several strategies for improvement. These include fostering collaboration between the government and the private sector, allowing multiple companies to distribute electricity to stimulate competition and enhance efficiency, and promoting energy-efficient technologies and practices to reduce overall demand. Furthermore, they recommend supporting off-grid solar systems and micro-hydro plants, launching public education campaigns on the benefits of renewable energy, and investing in advancements in renewable energy technologies.

According to IISID, the outlined recommendations stem from a comprehensive 41-page document developed through extensive research and analysis by experts in the field. The organization emphasized that without addressing systemic challenges—such as outdated infrastructure, over-reliance on gas and hydroelectric power, historical corruption, and inadequate maintenance and revenue collection—the government's current initiatives may fall short in delivering long-term solutions. While IISID acknowledges that the government is likely aware of these issues, they express uncertainty about whether all concerns have been fully recognized and addressed.
