Manchester United's manager, Erik ten Hag, has explained the reasoning behind his decision to exclude Jadon Sancho from the squad for the Premier League opener against Fulham.

Sancho’s omission was notable, reminiscent of his absence during last season's match against Arsenal, which resulted in a public confrontation between the player and Ten Hag. This incident ultimately led to Sancho being sidelined from the team and subsequently joining Borussia Dortmund on loan.

After Manchester United secured a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, Ten Hag addressed the media, clarifying that Sancho's absence was due to a health issue. He revealed that the forward is currently suffering from an ear infection, which prevented him from participating in the match. Ten Hag emphasized that player health is a priority for the team, and he hopes for Sancho’s swift recovery.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges Ten Hag faces in managing his squad while ensuring the well-being of his players, particularly with the season now underway.

In his words

  • “First of all we need squad depth, There will be a long season and it will be survival of the fittest but I can only put 20 players in the squad and Jadon in the week had an ear infection. He was not 100 percent fit.”
