Lagos, Nigeria - August 18, 2024: Matrix Energy Group has refuted recent claims that it imported substandard petroleum products into Nigeria, asserting that its products have consistently met all approved specifications.

The allegations emerged amidst growing concerns about the quality of petroleum imports and the involvement of Nigerian companies in international trading.

The controversy was fueled by a statement from Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited, who alleged that certain personnel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), oil traders, and terminals had established a blending plant in Malta. This claim was quickly denied by NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.

Notably, Nigeria’s petroleum imports from Malta skyrocketed to $2.8 billion in 2023, a stark increase from zero between 2017 and 2022, and a mere $13.32 million in 2016. Matrix Energy, a key player in Nigeria's oil marketing and trading sector, was identified as one of the major importers of fuel from Malta and Russia.

In response to these allegations, Matrix Energy released an official statement emphasizing its unwavering commitment to quality and transparency. Signed by Ibrahim Akinola, Head of Corporate Communications at Matrix Energy Group, the statement strongly denied any involvement in importing substandard petroleum products.

“Our attention has been drawn to a recent online publication where our name was featured. We would have loved to ignore the tissue of lies spewed in the publication, but the need to set the records straight and separate facts from sensation behooves us to address the matter, as well as to protect and uphold the integrity of the brand and reputation we have meticulously built over the past 20 years,” the statement read.

Matrix Energy highlighted its robust infrastructure, which includes vessels, oil and gas terminals, trucks, and retail outlets spread across 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The company insisted that it has consistently adhered to the guidelines set by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in all its importation activities.

“We have consistently imported products that meet the approved specifications, and we have never been found wanting. Our commitment to quality is reflected in the fact that none of our customers have ever rejected our products; indeed, demand for Matrix products often exceeds our capacity to supply, a testament to our reputation for reliability,” the statement continued.

Matrix Energy also refuted specific claims that it discharged 200,000 metric tons of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into its facility in July 2024, noting that while the company has the capacity to handle such volumes, it did not undertake such an operation.

The statement further explained that the company won the tender for the recently introduced Utapate crude oil blend from OML 13 through a transparent bidding process. It clarified that all operations are within the legal framework established by the Petroleum Industry Act, under the oversight of NMDPRA.

Addressing concerns about the company’s CEO, Abdulkabir Adisa, Matrix Energy dismissed any insinuations of misconduct, emphasizing his right to trade freely and his commitment to positive business practices. The company underscored that Adisa’s selection as a member of the Economic Coordination Council by the President is a recognition of his dedication to national development.

“Matrix Energy Group remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting Nigeria by ensuring the availability of petroleum products at competitive prices, in alignment with Mr. President’s vision for the country,” the statement concluded.

With these clarifications, Matrix Energy Group reaffirms its position as a leading and reliable player in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, dedicated to upholding the highest standards of quality and service.
