Historic Discovery: The Largest Diamond Unearthed in Over a Century in Botswana

In a remarkable find, the largest diamond discovered in more than 100 years has been unearthed at a mine in Botswana. The stunning 2,492-carat gem was showcased to the world during an extravagant viewing ceremony on Thursday, August 22, led by the country's President, Mokgweetsi Masisi.

A Significant Milestone for Botswana

Botswana’s government has announced that this enormous stone is the second-largest diamond ever found in a mine, and notably, it is the largest diamond discovered since the famous Cullinan Diamond in 1905. Weighing approximately half a kilogram, the diamond was a centerpiece at the presentation, with President Masisi being among the first to hold it.

Potential and Value

While officials expressed excitement over the discovery, they noted that it is too early to assign a value to the diamond or determine the method of sale. For perspective, a smaller diamond extracted from the same mine was sold for a record $63 million in 2016.

Celebrating a Historic Moment

“This is history in the making,” stated Naseem Lahri, the managing director for Lucara Diamond Corp., the Canadian mining company responsible for the find. Lahri expressed immense pride, emphasizing that this diamond is a significant product of Botswana.

Lucara announced on August 21 that they recovered this “exceptional” diamond from their Karowe Mine in central Botswana. The company confirmed that the diamond is of high quality and was found in pristine condition, thanks to advanced X-ray technology specifically designed to locate large diamonds.

A Legacy of Greatness

"This extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond has us ecstatic," said William Lamb, President and CEO of Lucara, in his statement. This discovery not only marks the largest diamond found in 119 years, but it also solidifies Botswana's reputation as a significant player in the diamond mining industry.

The Cullinan Diamond, which weighed 3,106 carats, remains the largest diamond ever discovered and was famously cut into various gems, some of which are now part of the British Crown Jewels. The recent discovery in Botswana is poised to add a new chapter to the legacy of remarkable diamonds in history.

As the world watches, the anticipation grows regarding the future of this magnificent gem and the impact it will have on Botswana’s economy and diamond industry.
