Omah Lay Calls Out Colleague Over Intellectual Property Theft

Nigerian Afropop music star Stanley Omah Didia, widely known as Omah Lay, has recently captured significant attention with a shocking revelation regarding his creative process. In an engaging conversation with media personality Zach Sang on a popular show that delves into music and pop culture, Omah disclosed that his album idea was stolen.

During the discussion, Omah Lay expressed his disappointment, revealing that a fellow Nigerian Afrobeat star had taken his album concept just four months after Omah had shared his plans. This incident has ignited discussions about the ongoing issues of intellectual property theft within the Nigerian music industry.

Omah Lay detailed a painful experience that forced him to rethink and redo his entire album. He alleged that the unnamed colleague, with whom he had initially discussed collaborating, used the idea he had shared to produce their own album.

This revelation sheds light on the contentious nature of the Nigerian music scene, where accusations of intellectual property theft are not uncommon. Omah Lay's experience highlights the challenges artists face in protecting their creative ideas and the emotional toll such betrayals can take.

Speaking on the Zach Sang Show, Omah Lay added that the incident made him re-record his album. In his words:

  • “My song ‘Holy Ghost’ is a new sound. I was going to make the whole album with the new sound but along the line, I changed my mind.”
  • “I shared an idea with a certain artiste and the artiste went ahead and put out an album with my idea and I had to re-record my album.”
  • “He came to me and I accepted for us to collaborate. Of course, it’s an artiste that I love. And I told him where I’m headed with the sound. Five months later, he put out an album with exactly all the same sound that I shared with him.”
  • “I had to go back and remake my album which is actually going to be the greatest album of all time in Afrobeats history.”
