In the Global Skills Report 2024, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) demonstrated the smallest growth in skill development, with only 12% increase in enrollments.


This highlights a pressing need for governments in the region to enhance accessibility to learning resources, addressing the barriers faced in online education.

In contrast, North American countries experienced significant progress, achieving a 61% year-over-year growth in Professional Certificate enrollments, particularly in fields such as data analytics, cybersecurity, and project management.

Nigeria's ranking in the report was 105th globally and 12th within SSA, showcasing a mere 26% in business skills, alongside 1% in technology and data science skills. The report emphasizes the necessity for SSA countries to cultivate a skilled young workforce, as the region currently suffers from a low number of skilled professionals. The global job market's demand for tech-savvy experts is increasing, necessitating a focus on training and education to fill these gaps.

Coursera's CEO, Jeff Maggioncalda, noted that the report is based on insights from over 148 million learners and 7,000 institutional customers, as well as content from 325 of the world’s leading universities and industry partners. The report reveals approximately 3.4 million skill gaps worldwide, indicating numerous unfilled job positions, underscoring the importance of training institutions to better equip learners to meet this evolving demand for skilled talent across various sectors.
